The Weekend in Review (Warmachine, Malifaux, Heroclix, OH MY!)

Oh my god, I am actually POSTING! Scandalous! Hopefully I will have more stuff for you guys in the coming weeks, whether it be Warmachine, Malifaux, Heroclix, or gaming in general. Who knows. Warning, there is some R rated stuff in here (words really, just stuff like F*** and whatnot)

So Friday I got a newsletter from Cool Stuff Games talking about a few sales. One that caught my eye was a Brick of either DC Justice League or Marvel Avengers Heroclix, for $30, which is a steal! (For those not in the know, a brick is 10 boosters, usually runs around $80-$100). I bought one, and then went up to my local game store with it to break it open. I was hoping for a Hulk. I did not get it this eve.

Saturday I hung out with my friend Dan. We decided that we would try Malifaux, and I ended up getting him a fate deck and his chosen starter as his bday / xmas gift. He chose Marcus, and I choose Seamus. We went back to my place, assembled them (fuckin hard to assemble undead whores! Yes, that is all true. I had to assembled undead hookers). And then I cooked my wife some food and we went out for lunch. While we ate I called over to Phoenix Games to see how busy they were. Turns out a PTQ was going on, and they figured it would not slow down till the evening. At the time, I decided not to go.

Later on in the evening, around 7pm I got a call from the store, asking me if I wanted to come in and play a game or two of Warmachine against some new players. Me and Dan had not tried out Malifaux yet either, and they told me that the MTG stuff had slowed down. So we went. Dan ended up playing a new Cryx player and I helped them.

Dan played Kromac, Feral Warpwolf, and 2 Argus, while the Cryx gent used the battlebox. I tried to stay out of it and just answer rules stuff but we quickly found that the Cryx player had only played 1 game prior to this. So me and Dan explained the rules, and when Dan’s attempt at killing an overextended Denny (seriously, the new guy ran her RIGHT Up behind the slayer, and Dan ended up doing a 2 handed throw) failed, I showed how the new guy, named Frankie could win. Dan had left himself furyless and had feated so he had some damage on Kromac. I showed Frankie how to feat, explained what it did, then showed him how to shake effects, move away from the Argus, and arc Venom Spray. He rolled 3 6’s on Damage after hitting Kromac (BARELY!) which killed Kromac outright (Dice -4 on a Venom Spray is still dangerous!) Dan had a fun time, and so did Frankie. I explained then that Denny is a backline spellcaster, who uses Arc Nodes to blast opponents.

After that game, we played Malifaux (or tried) We were flubbing along till a guy who plays it down at a place in Kissimmee popped up and helped us out. Sadly for Dan, the cards were not with him. It didn’t help that Dan had not read the Rulebook and I was not explaining things well enough.

After I killed his Rattler with a Belle (cheating up to severe damage is fun) he tried to have his Cat (which had jumped on a roof!) fall down safely. He flipped a Red Joker for damage, which caused him to have to flip another card, and killed his own cat. That was..bad. I am not sure we played it right (can you cheat your own Red Joker? I know you cant cheat a black one…)

Dan seems interested still in Malifaux, but I think he will either buy some more beasts, or switch to a different crew. I want to pick up the Sonnia box now. Seamus is pretty well self contained, but I really want to try Criid. FIRE BALL!!!

I ended up going up to Phoenix Games for thier Sunday Clix tourney. My wife ended up calling (she wanted to spend the day with me and hadn’t told me, DOH!) so after the first round I had to leave. I beat my opponent, but gave him the win since I was leaving. Apparently they thought that was worthy of their “fellowship” prize, which was an LE Burgler Clix. Not bad, he will go in my collection. I then went home and spent the rest of the day playing World of Warcraft with my wifey! :D

Which reminds me, I still need to go thru my clix and organize em into Trades and Keeps!

Overall my weekend was good. I want to get some more Malifaux games in, but I think for the next few weeks I am gonna stay home and avoid spending money. I have a tendency to spend cash when I go out even when I don’t want to :P

Building a Gaming Table? I must be nuts…

Or AM I?! In reality, I am not nuts. In fact, here is a video PROVING my sanity!

So the game went pretty well, my forces were doing decently till Dan used Rock Hammer and Rift, targetting his Low DEF Stones, to blast my Winterguard apart. It was pretty smart as the Blast Damage could STILL kill them at ARM 13.

Then I made a mistake, and tried to kill Kromac and FAILED, leaving a hole for his Stalker to charge in to Irusk. Being that Dan has not played many 25 point games I was doing my best to help the man, and he even thought ahead after I pointed out the possible charge, thinking to use his Druids to drag Irusk from the Dog to negate the DEF bonus, and then walking Kromac around my front arc of my Spriggan so he could cast Wild Aggression on his Stalker. One charge, and his 2 base attacks killed Irusk. Hell his first attack did 14 of my 17 boxes 0_o

The table worked great, and me and Dan are thinking about doing custom made to order hand built tables in the future. If the prototype works out of course.

Can’t wait to play more on my table :D

Scourge Bringer – The Results

So last Saturday was the Scourge Bringer event. Owen from Far Far Away had come down to Florida with his family for a week of fun and frivolity! His wife had also graciously allowed him to hang out with Me and Dan on the 13th (last Saturday) so Owen had planned out a whole campaign for the three of us. Basically we would play 3 games (and ended up only going to 2 stores) that were connected by a story. First let me throw some links up to the various Fiction bits that Owen wrote:

The Scourge Bringer “Coming Soon” Video
Scourge Bringer Rules (These are being updated)
Blood Frenzy – pButcher Fiction
Dominance – Kromac Fiction
Dark Revival – pThagrosh Fiction

All created by Owen. The man did a hell of a job to set this up as a fun event. He also built us 3 tokens for the Scourge Bringer itself (which I have now)

Furthermore, Owen had made me a gift. Now he had not told me what it was at all, only that it was handmade. Well it turns out he built me a set of Terrain for my home. A few hills, forest templates (with moveable trees) and a few rocks that can double as props for holding minis on the hills! All very nice stuff, and we used it in the first match of our event. I also got a couple of walls as well. He also bought my wife a pure silver ornament for a christmas tree. Comically we dont have a tree as our apartment is a bit too small for one :P Well at least we have our first family ornament (and its really intricate too!)

Now that we got the background out of the way, lets do my patented Clayton FailBattleReport! :P I call it that cause I never get too indepth just kinda a broad overview hehe

Armies Played:

Clay: pButcher
– Kodiak
– Juggernaut
– War Dog
MoW Kovnick

Dan: Kromac
– Warpwolf Stalker
– Feral Warpwolf

Owen: pThagrosh
– Carniveran
– Shredder
– Teraph

Game 1: Smash and Grab (played at Phoenix Games in West Orlando)

This game had 2 primary victory conditions. Get the token and haul it to the “South” table edge, or kill all opposing Warlocks/Warcasters. Dan’s speed proved to be the deciding factor in this match, as he was the first to the marker on turn 1 thanks to a push power attack on his Feral, followed by having it Warp speed and running. I didn’t do a whole lot here honestly, as my low speed and cautiousness caused me to fall WAY behind. I also got the table edge farthest from the south edge, so while Dan and Owen fought their way to the edge, I got mired away from them. DAMN MY KHADOR SPEED! Dan ended up winning, after Kromac survived a charge from the Carnie (and being unable to transfer due to his Beasts being outside his CTRL Range, thats something) and then leaping to the Table Edge. Leap is OP in this kinda match as it avoids Freestrikes :P

Game 2: King of the Hill (played at The Amorous Armadillo Game Shoppe in East Orlando)

This game had 3 victory conditions, and honestly I think one of them was a bit unbalanced, but oh well! Starting on the 3rd turn, you got a point if your Warlock/Warcaster was on the Hill in the center of the board. If you got the 3 points by the end of your turn you won. You could also win by taking the marker to the South edge of the board, or killing all opposing Warcasters/Warlocks.

Owen won this by scenario. The problem here that I saw is that you always got the point, regardless of anything. Meaning the first person to go on Turn 3 who had a warlock/warcaster on the hill would win if you didn’t get them off the hill. In this case, Dan and Owen both got on the hill at the same time, and my slowness and cautiousness again was my undoing. Owen ended up winning by putting his Carniveran that he ressurected with his Feat right in front of Butcher, which stopped me from getting up on the hill to prevent his 3rd point.

Game 3: Earthquake (Mosh Pit) (played at Phoenix Games in West Orlando)

We went back to Phoenix Games for this final match, as Sci Fi was crowded due to a tournament. The final match was basically a Mosh Pit. And in this one, the only real ways to win were to kill everyone else, or to get them out the mosh pit and be the only guy to have a model in there after the end of Turn 3. I actually was much more aggressive in this one, and was doing quite well. Towards the end Dan had the marker but was left with Kromac only. I ended up crushing most of Owen’s beasts and left him with Thagrosh and the Feralgiest…

In fact, the turn right before the end had the following on the board:

Dan – Kromac
Owen – pThagrosh, Feralgiest
Clay – pButcher, Wardog, Juggernaut (unharmed), Kodiak (unharmed)

Yes thats right, I had almost my WHOLE ARMY untouched and ready to go.

And then Owen’s dice caught fire. He charged me with pThag’s and needing 12’s to hit (def 19 on pButch thanks to Iron Flesh and the Dog) he proceeded to WRECK me. He missed 1 attack, and was able on his next turn to cut himself for Fury to wreck Kromac (who had only 1 HP left)

So in the end, Owen won the event by having all 3 bits of the Scourge Bringer AND was the last man standing. The entire day though was an absolute blast and to be honest I thought Owen might have been a bit formal, but instead he fit RIGHT in with me and Dan and our strange sense of humor.

I will however have my Vengence. If me, Dan, and Owen have to set up some sort of Vassal Campaign or something I will!

The Scourge Bringer WILL BE MINE.

Tomorrow…Scourge Bringer

The epic battle between Dan, myself, and Owen happens tomorrow.

Who will survive?

Who will claim the prize?

Wait…this ain’t Highlander! But in truth we shall see if Circle, Khador, or Legion comes out ahead in this epic campaign of murder, bloodshed, and tiny axe tokens.

I am honestly excited, not just to play Warmachine and Hordes for a full day, but also to be showing around a good friend of mine from across the pond. The plan for tomorrow is as follows:

Step 1: Grab Owen from his Rental Condo.
Step 2: Head to Phoenix Games in Orlando, play Game 1 of Scourge Bringer
Step 3: Go for lunch at Hamburger Mary’s. Nom tasty noms.
Step 3a: Possibly go get dessert at Mochi’s Frozen Yogurt!
Step 4: Play Game 2 at the Amorous Armadillo Game Shop
Step 5: Head back to Phoenix Games, and Play Game 3.
Step 6: Maybe grab dinner, and then take Owen back to his Condo.

Its good to have a plan. Hopefully I come out on top. The armies that will be clashing are 15 pointers, and look like this.

Owen (pThagrosh)
– Carniveran
– Teraph
– Shredder

Dan (Kromac)
– Warpwolf Stalker
– Feral Warpwolf

Myself (pButcher)
– Kodiak
– Juggernaut
– War Dog
MoW Kovnick

Who shall reign surpreme? We shall see…

WNW and “Scourge Bringer”

So last night was another night of Warmachine Wednesday at Phoenix Games. I had some fun, but honestly I didn’t really enjoy myself a whole lot.

The first game I played was using the 35 point pIrusk list that had been suggested to me. I am not going to go into great detail about the match itself, but I did learn a few things.

1. I still cannot beat Legion.
2. Angelius are devils.
3. pIrusk needs alot of Infantry (Better then what I have too)

The big problem with this match was that my opponent was an uber competative guy, and was playing hardcore and rules lawyering. I actually got into a 5 minutes argument with the guy about Flight. You see, he is returning the game after a long hiatus and is not super familiar with Mk2 and the changes. He kept telling me that Flight makes him immune to freestrikes and I kept trying to tell him it no longer does. I had him read the card in fact and pointed out that it does not say that its immune to freestrikes but it CAN Ignore intervening models. He assumed that since it ignored the models they couldn’t hit it.

We got into a few other minor arguments as well but that one really stuck out in my mind. After the game was over he again went to the other legion player and tried to argue with HIM about the Flying thing. That legion player pointed out that it doesnt say it on the card and that Legion lost that in Mk2. He did not seemed thrilled about that change.

The second game was better, and I tried out the pVlad list at 35 that was in my last post. This one took forever and we had to call it at Midnight as I had to leave to get up for work in the morning. We called it a draw as we both had lost a total of 6 points. That game just went CRAZY Slow. I should have been running, and we played one of Baulders spells wrong (I didn’t realize that his forest spell was an upkeep and thus could only create 1 forest at any given time, so he ended up creating a constant wall to block my LOS to his stuff)

The pVlad list did MUCH better. S&P is a crazy awesome spell. I also <3 the Kodiak. I am wondering though if taking out the Destroyer and Wardog and putting in the Spriggan would have been better. I kinda liked being able to shoot with the Destroyer and not HAVe to feed it focus. But I digress

Now what I am really excited about is this coming November 13th we have…SCOURGE BRINGER! A 3 part 3 person campaign developed by Owen of Far Far Away involving Me (pButcher), Dan (Kromac), and Owen (pThagrosh). We are going to playing 3 15 point games, each at a different store in my area. Hopefully we get lots of pictures and things and everything goes well.

I am going to be running the following “themey” pButcher List

– Juggernaut
– Kodiak
– War Dog
Man-o-War Kovnick

Not the best no, but I got 3 Weapon Masters, access to pButchers silly feat, and Fury. I will WRECK things if I get in range. And with all the high ARM it should be hard to take me out (maybe).

Thankfully Owen is not bringing the stupid flying snake that is the Angelius :P

It’s done. Its decided!

I am going with Minions as my horde faction. Why you might ask?

I mean…just look at him. JUST LOOK. He is awesome. Now I am gonna wait till I get the Minions Book in December before I start planning, but I am going to start saving now. I got a good solid Khador group that can play at 35 or lower which works for me, so now my saving is going to be towards the mighty Minions!

Now the question is…Pigs or Gators?!

WNW: Newbies Ho!

I think its finally working! We actually had 2 new people show up to Wednesday Night Warmachine at Phoenix Games last night, and I played against both!

First we had JR, a friend of mine who I knew back in High School! He has been playing our Monday Night DND Encounters (we run it Monday nights to keep from conflicting with Wednesday Night Drafts). He has been an avid 40k player and LOVeS to do Conversions and MOdifications. Our TO and most of our player’s don’t care about conversions as long as we know what it is, so he already messing with his battlebox. For example, Stryker is now impaling a Space Marine with his sword while he blows his brains out. He even has the exit wound modeled. Kinda creepy.

Anyway, it was the Khador Battlebox vs the Cygnar Box for my first game. It was hilarious. JR was of course learning and I was showing him the kind of things people can do in this game, including my 19′ Sorsha charge! For those who don’t know:

pSorsha casts Wind Rush first. Moves 6 inches. Then she casts Boundless Charge which gives her +2 Movement on a Charge. Then she declares a charge on her target. 6 + 3 + 2 = 11 inch charge, with 13 inch threat due to Reach. Add in the 6 you already moved due to Wind Rush and you have a 19in total distance you can get across the board. So on turn 3 I did that, got in range, and before my Charge Attack popped my feat and brought Stryker to 3 boxes!

Oh and as a side note: His Lancer was squaring off with my Juggernaut and thanks to his damn Shock Shield he fried my Juggernauts Cortex in one turn (Charge and got 2 of the cortex boxes and then hit with the shield to kill the last box!)

Then for the NEXT 3 TURNS we sat in base to base, trying to kill each other. On the 1st he popped his feat and brought Sorsha to 1 box! 1. Single. Box. Turn after that I could not hit him, turn after that he could not hit me, and finally on the 3rd round of beatings I got him and killed him. He had a blast.

He ended up facing Richard and Richard’s Battlebox of Circle, but I have no idea how that ended.

My next game was against a new Trollblood player who had traded some of his 40k stuff to Kenny (The Cygnar Player) for his Trollstuff. Kenny gave him a kind of…odd setup. Grim, Bushwhackers, Blizter, and then 2 Impalers and an Axer along with a Fell Caller. Not BAD but this guy wanted to roll up in Melee. I let him Proxy a caster of his choosing and per his wants, we played 15 total points. I brought my usual 15:

– Juggernaut
– Destroyer
– War Dog

He decided to try pMadrak!

– Axer
– Impaler
– Impaler
Bushwhackers (Min)

Madrak and the Bushwhackers dealt with my Widowmakers within the first 2 turns. My Widowmakers were only able to kill 2 Pygs! Sadness.

His Axer got a charge off on my Juggernaut and was able to knock out the Juggernauts left arm (open fist) and movement. My Juggernaut then crushed the axer. Butcher was sitting with Iron Flesh and I didn’t want to drop it, so I actually USED the Butchers gun on an Impaler!

The win came after a flurry of ranged attacks from his 2 Impalers and Madrak on Butcher, dealing 12 total points to me. But he made once crucial mistake.

He left Madrak with 1 fury and in clear view of Butcher, and in charge range.

My turn has me feat, drop Iron Flesh, and charge. I bring Madrak to a tough roll in 2 swings….and HE MAKES A TOUGH ROLL! So I buy another attack, force another tough roll, and he fails that one.

All in all a fun game!

Both guys seemed to have fun and were actually excited about prospects of expanding. Hopefully when the 25 point tourney comes around on the 30th they will be there.
