Wargaming Resolutions 2011: My Intentions are Clear

Beyond my normal resolutions for the year (Lose weight, do better with my diet) I have some specific ones for Wargaming.

Also, HAI GUYS I R BLOGGIN OMG!!!11!1!

Yea I went there.

I know I have not been blogging much this past month, but in truth that is due to the holidays, as well as a few things I had to do that made me…unhappy. Most notably of which was surrending my 2 Guinea Pigs to an animal shelter as I no longer had the time to really take care of them the way I needed to (if they got sick, I could not spend the time needed to get them better for example).

Regardless, I took a dive back in December, and ordered from Wayland Games a Chaos Space Marines Battleforce, a Chaos Lord in Terminator, and the Codex. But wait! I can hear you say. YOU DONT WANT TO PLAY 40K you want to play Warmachine!

This is true. But I have alot of Khador right now, and not really any of it painted (unless you count the already painted Kodiak). Furthermore, I want to really give 40k a shot now that I have proven to myself that I CAN do these sort of games.

I am starting small, a 750 point force (the battleforce and HQ is that) and my FLGS is running an Escalation League starting around the 21st. They are doing it a bit weird though (250, 400, 600) point levels or something like that, but I intend to participate.

So for 40k my resolutions are as follows:
1. Create my OWN Chapter. I am working on this. So far I have dubbed them “The Night Terrors” and the idea behind them is that they are led by Lord Erebos, The Boogeyman. They work similar to the Night Lords, but without the natural benefits of being able to see in the dark.

2. Paint them. Yes thats right, I am going to paint them.

3. USE THEM.

As far as Warmachine stuff goes I wanted to comment on the Khador Battle Wagon.

Seriously PP? I get a primitive tank? Drawn by HORSES?! In all honestly I am not a fan of it, in look or in theory. Its a tank. Yay tank? I dont play Warmachine for Tanks or Vehicles. I play it for Jacks, and damnit I wanted a big ass super jack.

Instead I get a horse drawn tank.

I do not intend to buy it, even if its the best thing ever and the only way to deal with other War Engines. In fact, if it becomes such that I must have one JUST to deal with other War Engines then I wont bother with the game until something changes.

However, I do have some Warmachine Resolutions:

1. Paint them.

2. Play more

Nothing much with them, other then painting them and playing. However, with the Khador, I am trying to figure out if I should strip them and start over, or if I should just deal with them as I have them and get them done. I am not sure honestly.

In EITHER Case (40k, or Warmachine) I am not going to expand my forces UNTIL the current stuff is painted. Period, plain and simple. This will help me save money for one, and two, force me to paint them.

Wish me luck folks. I am going to need it.

Dipping Minis (Or How I learned how NOT to do it!)

This weekend I started painting my Khador. I have not made much progress as I was trying to also Dip the minis. I am mainly going for a decent tabletop quality force, and thus far…I am learning how NOT to do it :P

Firstly lets go over HOW I am dipping, and then I can explain what NOT to do.

Basically I borrowed my dads cordless power drill, and I am gluing the base of the mini to a piece of cardboard that has a nail run through it. Then, I use that nail like a drill bit. Dip the mini all the way in, let it sit for a couple of seconds, then remove it. Let it drip the excess off, and then stick the whole thing in a bucket and spin it via the drill.

This works out quite well…once I got the hang of it (for the most part)

Mistake 1 – Gluing the mini directly to nailhead. It does not work at all for Warmachine at least. The issue here is weight. I had my Juggernaut go flying off during the spin, which ruined him even AFTER I tried to shake him.

Mistake 2 – Touching the mini without gloves. Yea, I forgot to get gloves thinking everything would work out just dandy (DOH!) Thus I got the dip (Minwax Polyshades which is a Polyurethane Varnish) all over my hands. And, being an idiot (despite being WARNED) I forgot to get WD40. Yes, you want to get WD40 that stuff will remove the Varnish. Course your hands get oily but hey at least the varnish gets removed!

Mistake 3 – Not letting the excess drip off. Sounds weird right? Well I dipped my Destroyer after figuring out the “glue to cardboard with nail through it trick” and instead of letting the dip set, I just took it straight into the bucket and spun it. Thus the dip didn’t really darken anything. Just made the mini shiny.

Mistake 4 – Flat Area’s will STILL hold the dip so make sure you wick it off somehow. I found THIS one out after doing a Kayazy assassin as a test for what I THOUGHT would be my FINAL test. I got him in, let him drip the excess, and then spun the rest off. However, the back of his cloak and the internal spot on his cloak held TOO MUCH dip even AFTER Spinning, and thus has a big ol brown stain. Thankfully THAT is fixable easily. Unlike my Juggernaut, who is being stripped in Simple Green as we speak.

So what is my verdict thus far on dipping?

Well, it looks good on the FRONT of my mini regardless of the shine, and it DOES do like a wash (mixed with protecting the mini). However, I feel that actually dipping the mini and then shaking is the wrong way to go.

Next test? Treating the dip like a wash and brushing it on. I feel that this will give me more control and work a bit better. Here is hoping I can figure this out (I got how to wash pretty quick, but this is really messin with me!)

Of course I am going to be doing this outside, and I will STILL be mounting the minis to bits of cardboard with nails in em to protect my hands. Or I could just get some cheap gloves.

One or the other. Or I could just wash the damn things.

Maybe I will just pay someone to paint my crap. The only problem with that of course is that I cannot PLAY with it while it is being painted!

I hate painting >.<

The Paint Thickens!

I have my Khador. We know I do, I talk about them frequently (some may say too much?) but right now my entire army is spraypainted a pale blue color.

This bothers me. I have to say that I am not a fan of unpainted minis, but at the same time I hate painting! An interesting quandry you may say! Well, if you all remember I have actually painted an entire army before.

What? You did?

Thats right, I did! You may not believe me, but these images may change your mind.

The Blackstone Kriel

Yup, that was a 35 point Troll Brick that I did back when I was playing originally, before I…tried to quit. So while I may not know all those fancy techniques like drybrushing or highlighting, I at least know how to paint the base coat and do a wash. Which honestly, is all I want (Tabletop basic quality FTW)

I don’t think I will ever be as good as some of the better painters out there (such as GdayBloke, Owen of FarFarAway, Kerry of Warpainter, ect)

Now the reason I spraypainted my Khador was for speed purposes. I wanted a pale almost snow blue color for them, so I got that part done. But now I gotta do the details, the units, the metals, ect. I was originally going to wait till my friend Dan painted my guys, but I am sick of waiting (And painted models play better amirite? :O)

Furthmore, I think that painted models will help build more interest then just metal ones.

Here is a list of the paints I am going to be picking up this Saturday!

Paint Colors:
Black
White
Red
Blue
Flesh Tone
Leather Tone
GW Dwarf Bronze
GW Boltgun Metal

Minwax Dip, Testors Dullcoat

My main reason for wanting to paint them now? The big event happening in November, where Owen himself will be coming here to the states! We have a 3 part Campaign planned that will be between Me, Owen and Dan. You may have seen Owen’s posts about “Scourge Bringer”? Well thats the event. We each will be packing 15 point armies, and the goal here for me is to have at least that 15 point group painted by November 13th.

The 15 points that I am packing?

pButcher
– Juggernaut
– Destroyer (painted)
– Wardog
Widowmakers

Here is hoping that I can make my Khador look halfway decent!

Another Weekend, more Stuff

Another weekend has passed us by, and I am yet again trapped in the clutches of the dreaded WORKBEAST 09. This thing has MAT 15 and PS 25 vs my Sanity! It is a character beast you see, from the WORK Faction. I think we have all faced it from time to time. Its pretty brutal.

But during the weekend you are protected from WORKBEAST 09, and I think thats why I love it so.

This Saturday would be what I call a bust. I spent most of it just sitting in Phoenix Games, watching a TCGPlayer Qualifier MTG Tourney going on, and watching Dan paint. It was fine really, but kinda hot and boring. I did however get myself 4 Man o War Shocktroopers and a Kovnick from a friend of mine (using the Kovnick as the leader of the Shocktroopers), along with a Manhunter. So I have 25 points of Khador now. My friend is getting out of the game, so he gave me a solid price on the MoW. He also let me borrow Behemoth to decide if I like him. I am not sure yet as I have not had a chance to run him. He is offering it to me though for $25… and I got him I could run the following 35 point force with what I got:

pButcher
– Juggernaut
– Behemoth
– Destroyer
– War Dog
Min MoW Shocktroopers
Widowmakers

Not the best 35 point list by far, but Full Throttle could alleviate some of the issues.

So as I said, I watche Dan paint his 15 point Circle list. Here are some pics of what he crafted!

Scary Circle!
The Stalker is a Tall Man
Quick, hide from the Flashing Thing!
Rawr. Yea...Rawr.

Tonight I am also going to be running DND Encounters: Dark Sun. I got about 6-7 people who are claiming they are gonna show, I know for sure 4 will be there (Dan, Kenny, Aaron, and Jenn). The other 3 are iffy. We shall see. Hopefully JR and Trotsky will show up for sure.

Aaron and Jenn are very into DND Rping so I hope they understand that Encounters is designed to be RP lite, as it is more of a showcase of the way 4th Ed Combat works and the way Darksun works. I wont stifle RPing though of course.

Finally, I am thinking of getting of finally jumping into Malifaux as both me and Dan are curious. I own the Rulebook but I have not actually done anything with it. I am considering Sonia Crid’s crew with the Witch Hunters as it looks fun and Sonia is an interesting character. That and I have a thing for Redheads :3

Stay tuned for more wackiness to come in the future folks!

Yet another New Blog

Today, I talk about a painting blog that is NOT in English! Thats right, I cannot understand a word that is being said on this thing.

But I found it via a thread on the PP Boards, regarding a man who is painting Trollbloods. While I may no longer be a part of a Kriel, I will always be a Trollblood at heart. Apparently this man runs a painting service as well. Here is his blog, aptly titled “DuEnDe MiNiATurEs. Hopefully you might be able to read the text to get more info.

Also, his Trollblood thread can be found here – Duende’s Trollbloods

Finally, for a sample of this mans AWESOME work, I present the following.

Kreoss meets the Butcher, and a painted Destroyer?

Yesterday was a bad day at work. It was busy, hellish, and I got yelled at more times in that single day then I did all last week (I work in a Customer Service position, so I get yelled at alot). So after talking to my pal Dan, who was having a rough day as well, we decided to run up to Rhubarb since it was Warmachine night and see about playing a few guys. We both figured that we should play at the store while it was there before having to deal with finding a new place to play.

We get up there, and we hang around for a bit before each of us getting into a game. My friend Dan got to play our local Press Ganger Chris Cueavas, and I was playing a new player by the name of Dillon. On Saturday I had actually talked to him while I played Dan, as he was playing Warhammer Fantasy and seemed interested in Warmachine. Lo and Behold the boy had gotten himself some Menoth, and was playing. He lost to a circle player by the name of Tom, and then we played.

He ran the following:

High Exemplar Kreoss
– Revenger
– Repenter
– Crusader
Min Zealots

Basically he had the battlebox with some extra Zealots. In truth I think the Temple Flameguard would have been a better choice but thems the breaks.

I of course brought my pButcher list. For reference that is:

The Butcher of Khardov
– Juggernaut
– Destroyer
– War Dog
Widowmakers

This game was a slugfest that broke down on my feat turn. On the first 2 turns we both slowly moved up. On turn 2 he left a gaping hole for my Destroyer to shoot through, and I nailed Kreoss for about 6 damage on a boosted Bombard shot. He was amazed at the damage it dealt.

Turn 3 is where things got interesting. He feated, knocking down Butcher, the Destroyer, and the Juggernaut. He then charged Juggs with his Crusader, and barely scratched it. He threw a couple of bombs at my War Dog, realizing how dangerous that dog is, but did nothing.

My next turn I stood everyone up with Shake Off (cept the Juggernaut, he was in melee with 2 Zealots and the Crusader), and then activated Butcher and feated. The Butcher himself charged the Crusader, bringing it down to only have 3 boxes left after I spent my focus. The Destoryer was in melee with the Revenger, so he just walked up and took a swing and missed. The Juggernaut went and crushed the 2 Zealots he was stuck with but could not get the Crusader (missing a Zealot bites) My Widowmakers again proved how useless they are by missing every shot but 1, and that was against a Zealot! In fact, they did better hitting my flipping Juggernaut and Destroyer (I did 1 to each, barely hurt em).

My Widowmakers hate me you see. 8 total shots that game, and I did more damage to myself with em then the enemy >.<

After my turn, he went. He then took a free strike on the Revenger to get it into Melee with the Butcher, and he had loaded it with Focus. He had also given the Repenter 2 focus so it could burn me THROUGH my Juggernaut. His Revenger did a about 9 damage to Butcher, and then the Flame Thrower fired, and with a boost did another 8 damage, leaving me at 3 HP. Phew it was a close one. I also got to use my dogs Counter Charge on the Revenger, and did a bit of damage but not enough to slow it down.

Then he tried to kill Butcher with an Immolation (the single target Fire spell that Kreoss has) and missed. I gave him the option of which of his 2 jacks that were in melee with to hit, and he picked the Crusader.

Bad idea. He rolled MAX damage on the hit, and the Crusader only had 3 boxes left. It was burned up…leaving a straight line between the Butcher and Kreoss.

On my turn, I kept all 6 focus, knowing I would need the ARM boost for what I was about to do. I then charged Kreoss, taking a free strike from the Revenger. At ARM 24 he was at dice minus 11, but the Free strike bonus could negate that. He rolls, and connects with the hit…and deals NOTHING.

Whats funny though is on my charge I flipping MISS. I only needed a 5 to hit and I roll 3. So I burn a focus, buy an attack, and boost the damage when it hits, crushing Kreoss into the ground.

I then walk over to Dan’s game, and he wins, beating a Vayl list that was apparently Vayl, a Shepard, Carniveran, and Scythean. They were playing Mangled Metal / Tooth & Claw. Dan was running his Kromac, Stalker, and Feral combo.

All in all a great evening, and Dan decided he wanted to paint my Khador.

Here is what he has done to my Destoryer thus far. And yes, its baby blue looking. I rather like the shade! And check out the flames in the Bombard. Thats hotness right there.

35 Points of Painted Trolls: DONE

Well 34 points, but who is really counting. I am still debating whether or not I want to paint the Swamp Gobbers for the last point. I am still not sold on them in Mk2. I think I am going to see how they work out. Anyway, in reality this is 39 points of Trolls (Both Impalers) but I will only be using 1 in the list.

So first up, what I did today: pMadrak, Elder, Chronicler

The 3 Kings

Yes I based them.  ALL of them.  Its nothing special, just sand and some crushed rocks.  I think it looks good and fits with the Blackstone Kriel.  Desert / Mountain trolls GO GO.  I tried to make Madrak a little lighter to show his albinoness but I went too heavy on the blue.  Live and learn!

And now, the GROUP SHOT!

The Blackstone Kriel

If you notice that one Champ upfront has the strange colored sand:  Its cause I tried to use some Gryphonne Sepia wash on it to see what would happen.  I followed a youtube video suggestion that said I could wash/ink the sand right after basing.  We shall see how it comes out when dried.  I dont think I like it much.

But there, 2 days ahead of schedule, I have proven to myself that I CAN PAINT THESE THINGS.
