Patreon: Thoughts and Musings

As I get nearer and nearer to 300 subs on Youtube, I start to ponder where I should be going with it. Granted, my recent shift in focus to RPG content in general seems to be perfect. People love my RPG stuff (I think?) and I am doing well overall.

I think one the coolest things I have gotten into is reviewing RPG products. Recently I released my first review, on the campaign setting the Ice Kingdoms, and it was (I feel) pretty well received. I got a few more things to review already, and I really enjoy sharing these products. Its also easy to do (For me at least).

However, I have one limiting factor in all this. Its the same thing that limits me upgrading my equipment such as a better camera, or getting new games for reviewing, and so on.

Its money.

Now Patreon is a BIG THING in the internet world. Its basically crowdfunding artists and creative types. I know a ton of people who have em, and for a while I even backed a couple (minimally, had to stop cause, well, money!). Hell I even have seen a guy create a patreon before he even has a prodcut / show / blog / anything! Its a big deal. Popular folks even live off patreon like it was a full time job (Which given some creators, it actually is!)

I like the idea of patreon as well, personally. I like the idea of the fans of something / someone helping to support it. I love how fans can pledge as much or as little as they want, with limits built in. I like how Creators can have rewards for pledge levels, goals, and even setup if its monthly or per “creation”. I have had a few folks I know tell me I should create one… But the fact of the matter is, I don’t know if I should.

Most Patreon accounts have reward tiers. Stuff like “Pledge $10 an episode and get a free sticker!” and shit like that. Thing is, when thinking about my own show / videos, I dont really have anything to offer. I have no merch, although my wife is working on a shirt design at the moment, I have no time to do things like game nights and the like. I just dont have anything to offer BUT my work. It seems silly, and a bit rude, to ask for cash for no other reason then to do so.

Then there is the issue of reach. I have roughly 290 subs on Youtube, 1500 followers on Twitter, and a smattering of folks elsewhere (here on the blog and tumblr ect). I seriously doubt any of the folks following me would in fact support my weird ass little youtube endevour for no reward at all.

Granted, all I would use the Patreon money for would be things to support the show. Stuff like more products to discuss and the like, maybe giveaways and things. Or paying my net bill (cause I need to keep my upload rate!)

I dunno. Just thinking out loud I suppose. Sometimes I need to do this so I can put my thoughts on paper.

What do you think about Patreon?

TNT Wrestling: What is this whole thing?

So you might have seen me tweet about my new fake wrestling show, TNT Wrestling. Recently, I got a hold of a copy of WWE 2k17 and, realizing that I finally have a PC that can stream, I decided to try streaming this.

Originally it started with just showing off the game, but then the bug that has been in the back of my mind since WWE 2k14 came forth and bit me.

I could do it. I could run a fake wrestling promotion. And I had a ton of friends who were willing to let me make fake wrestlers (aka CAWs) for the fed and to use them in it against regular WWE Superstars.

But what is TNT Wrestling?

————————–THE STORY—————————-

WWE has fallen on hard times, and Vince decided to hire a up and coming youtuber and wrestling fan to become the GM of a new weekly show. Disbanding RAW and Smackdown, this new Show would be called “Terminally Nerdy Thursdays” aka TNT Wrestling. The monthly Pay Per Views would stay the same (Wrestlemania, Money in the Bank, ect), and in addition to a new group of stars, some of the old guard would be a part of this new exciting show.

————————–THE SETUP—————————-

Yes that story is nuts. But hey, I have a story. A wrestling is nuts.

Every Sunday, from 11am EST to 3pm EST / 3:30pm EST I will be streaming TNT Wrestling. I will be doing my best to complete 1 week of Universe Mode in game.

There are 2 Shows each week.

  • TNT, aka Terminally Nerdy Thursdays: This is the main show. It has a TNT World Heavyweight Champ, and a TNT Intercontinental Champ. It also has the TNT Tag Team Champs, and a TNT Women’s Champ.
  • WWE Main Event: Saturday Nights, a minor show hosting 5 matches a week.

So a total of 12 matches + 2-3 In Game Promos in 4 to 4.5 hours. If I have spare time I will do some exhibition matches and the like as needed.

Pay Per Views will be their own week as well, because they are special.

No matches will be simulated, and I will be playing the role of the main GM. I am going to use the AI as a Booker. Basically I will look at a card, adjust it as I see fit, set up active rivalries (manual rivalries) BEFORE THE STREAM, and then play the matches and provide some commentary on them while also interacting with the fans in chat. The matches will for the most part be AI Controlled save in certain situations where I want a particular wrestler to WIN or LOSE for the story. Promos will also be AI Controlled.

There also will be surprises here and there, such as live promos, live interviews, and other things as I can manage them. Its a little nuts what I already have in store.  These will be inserted into the show at appropriate moments.

Currently, there is a ROSTER available for viewing, but it also has a lot of notes on it showing what I am working on.

If you wish to chat with the talent, you can join the Official TNT Discord Channel. You can also keep up with announcements of episodes and see the full episode archive there, including the Episode Zero at the bottom of this page, which had the tournaments I used to crown the inagural World and IC Champs.

————————–EPISODE ZERO—————————-

Below you will find the first 3 hour stream, aka Episode Zero of this whole thing.

I hope to see you guys there. There is also the possibility of joining the roster, but for that, you need to join the discord and talk to me.

STAY NERDY FOLKS!

Some Announcements #dnd #youtube #important #rpghandi

So I have been pondering these last few days about my YouTube channel, where its going, and what my aims are at the moment.

I realized a few things about it and I wanted to make a little announcement. Most folks who see this will be from Twitter, and those who are on YouTube will get an update video next week mixed in with my Pathfinder game Play Report.

First, one of the big things that has occurred recently is that I went from 173 subs back in January to 238 as of today. That’s a jump of 65 subscribers, and its all because of a particular video that I did that Mr Matthew Mercer (voice of Mcree and DM of Critical Role) retweeted. So that happened. Thanks to all those who followed and subbed by the way, hopefully I don’t disappoint. The video is found below.

Next, I wanted to talk about where my channel is going, content wise. Originally, my channel was going to be a place to talk about all the different nerdy things I enjoy such as movies, music, gaming, and reading. However, its really ended up being focused on gaming. With RPGs being the specific sort of gaming. I mentioned in my personal discord server that I was thinking of going full RPG on my channel, and I got the following comment:

rpghandi

Ya know what? He is right too.  Although as She-Wolf on twitter pointed out Ghandi was Hindu not Catholic so ya know, whatever.

I do talk about RPGs a lot. Both video games and tabletop rpgs in fact. My most popular videos are the ones talking about DND, and my most popular streams are the RPG based ones.

I guess I am #RPGhandi (although #RPGBuddah makes more sense, given my size). Thanks Zardoz on twitter for that hashtag lol I claim that btw I am now #RPGhandi hehe NAMASTE

So this is a formal written announcement that from now on, my channel is going to be focus on both video games and tabletop RPGs. Streams and Vlogs both.

Finally, and prolly one of the biggest things here is this: My DND Retrospective Videos are going on Hold. One of the things I told myself when I restarted my Youtube channel was that I would only do things I found fun and that I enjoyed. And I like doing Vlogs and I like streaming, but I found that I really am not a fan of doing these structured and edited reviews, especially of games I just don’t like playing. It feels like a waste of time. Further, these videos have the least amount of watch time (ie total amount watched) and while they have more views that only because I stick em on Reddit. If I didn’t, I doubt they would have anywhere near the number of views. The watch time might be better though.

I think I still want to do a few more Retrospective Reviews, but I want to focus more on STYLE rather then just sheer number. And I want to take my time with them as well. 8 hours is an unfair amount of time to spend with a game when it might last 20-30 and to judge it on that and then review it is kinda shitty to be frank. So for now, until I make a decision on how I am going to handle them, I am putting those on hold. I may never do another full review styled thing for them either. Sorry if you enjoyed it. I just don’t like making em.

So there ya go. If you have any questions just comment here, or when I do my update video next week feel free to comment there.

Thanks for reading and watching and all that jazz folks :D

Want your Nerdy Item Reviewed? Here are the Rules

This is also now a page at the top. But I figured I would post it as well.

So I have gotten a couple of random requests to review things again. I figure I can open reviews up for those who are serious about it. I will only review certain things, and with certain guidelines and rules regarding them. Here are my rules, and how you go about requesting a review.

Be aware reviews will be done in video form. I no longer do written reviews.

Things I will review (Specific Rules Below):

1) Books
2) Games
3) Music
4) Comics
5) Movies
6) Loot Crates (of the Nerdy Variety)

Now, here are some specifics about the above categories. In ALL CASES you must be willing to provide the item you want reviewed. I am not spending what little money I have to buy a copy. Sorry guys.

Books:

I will accept books in EPUB or MOBI format. I do not do anything of an overtly sexual nature. I primarily read sci fi and fantasy. I will read the book until I either finish OR it loses me. Sorry but if the book can’t hold my attention that is a problem in and of itself. The book “getting better later” is not a valid excuse for poor pacing.

Games:

For video games, I need a copy of the game via Steam Key, GoG Key, or Humble Bundle Key. I do PC Games only, as I do not have any consoles. I tend towards almost anything but sports titles and anything akin to Dark Souls. Sorry, I have no tolerance for “git gud” games. I am also not a huge fan of MOBA styled top down games. Beyond that, I promise to play the game for a minimum of 2 hours. If I want to keep going after that I will. However, I have a 2 hour rule and if the game cannot hold my attention for those 2 hours, well, thats the end of it.

For Physical Games, I need a copy of the game. I can provide an address for it to be sent to, if need be. Beyond that I am pretty open to trying anything.

For Tabletop RPG games I prefer physical copies of the rules. If you prefer, you can give me a EPUB or MOBI formatted copy. I do adventures or systems. These will take a while however as I have to find time to play using the rules after reading em / play the adventure.

Music:

No Rap, Regge, Hip Hop or Country. I am willing to try anything else. I will review it song by song. I tend to prefer albums. MP3 or Physical release is acceptable. If digital, give me some album art please.

Comics:

Electronic format PDF / MOBI / EPUB or a physical version. Either or.

Movies:

Electronic format is fine. I don’t do horror or anything politically driven. Not my thing.

Loot Crates:

I like gaming, nerdy shit, tabletop games, wrestling. If your loot crate has nothing to do with these things please do not approach me. The answer will simply be no.

If you want me to review something, you can either contact me on Twitter via DM (@cbsa82) or by email at cbsa82@gmail.com

Be aware I may not accept it. If you just send me something randomly, there is no promise I will review it. If you want to see if I am willing its best to just ask me first. And I am picky. You need to WOW me.

Timeframe wise I promise that if I accept is I WILL review it. Just might not be immediate. I work a 40 hour a week job and have a personal life.

Also be aware I am a harsh but fair critic. I will tell you what I like, what I don’t like, and why.

For examples of my review style I present the following. First, my written reviews are a good idea of how I judge things.

A List of Books I have previously reviewed
Game Reviews I did for Vox Ludicus

And all video reviews will be in a format similar to the below video, and posted to that channel:

Its time to talk Youtube Numbers again! – Channel Update

I like to write these posts, it lets me get my thoughts down on paper about how my youtube endevours are doing, where things are going, and where I think they will go!

So, I started uploading on 8/24/16 with my new channel. As of today, I am at 136 subscribers to my channel, which is pretty neat!

Now lets talk monthly growth. The big factor to youtube is actually not your sub count, but rather a combination of sub count, retention, views, and watch time. Its “the algorithm” as they say. So I may have very few subs, but according to my other numbers what I have is insanely loyal. Lets take it month by month.

September 2016

So this month was when I was just getting started again. I only had 4 videos total go up, and I dont believe I had started livestreaming yet. This is represented in my overall numbers:

sept2016

As you can see I have quite a bit of watch time but my over per view watch time average is very low, at 2 minutes. This is because I tried an advertising thing on Fivvr, and got nearly 1k views on a video, but each view was like 1-2 minutes in length. You can see the spike clearly in the left column. Thats why those numbers are so skewed. I have not bothered to try such an experiment since. I also got a total of 74 likes across the 5ish videos I had uploaded by the end of the month, so thats excellent. Overall, a solid start.

October 2016

This was the first month where I started to get rolling strong I think. Here is the overall for that month:

oct2016

Now this month you can see that my Watch Time overall and my average per view has gone up drastically. And if you notice, it happened towards the end of the month. What else did I start doing in October? I started STREAMING. In fact, the longest videos are the streams, and they have the largest amount of watch time. This actually helped my channel as a whole. Youtube only cares how many minutes of my stuff people are watching, and they watched TONS of stuff towards the end of October. Mind you, these numbers are a combination of LIVE and On Demand vieweing. If I switch to just On Demand (meaning no live events) I get Watch Time Total 1959 Minutes, Average of 5:26 per view, 360 views. Still damn impressive overall, and a direct increase from the previous month.

Novermber 2016

I might as well call my youtube a gym cause of all the SICK GAINS I am getting. Check this out:

nov2016

This is the first month where I really try to livestream at least once if not twice a week. And you can clearly see this. My overall watch time is high, my average watch per view is high again, and so one. Now you will notice that I am gaining less subs each month as time goes on, which honestly is fine, I kinda expected it given I don’t really promote myself or my channel very often. Same with the amount of likes I get. Basically, people really like to stick around and watch my stuff. And if we go to On Demand only (ie not live) I am looking at 1787 minutes of video overall, average per view of 6:39, with 268 views. So my overall views went down, but the average time each person watched went up. Interesting indeed!

What do these numbers tell me? That I am clearly doing something right, even if I myself feel I suck. What fans I do have genuinely like what I am doing and clearly want more of something, but what? I am moving to twice monthly (or every 2 weeks) for my VLogs, and my streams will still be at least once a week if I can swing it, barring any personal stuff. So we shall see how December shapes up for the month. Already December is sitting at the following however:

dec2016

Not too bad of a start, and doesnt include the last 2 days when I gained 3 subs putting me at my current count, so there is that. Lets see where the month leads, shall we?

Oh and for fun, here are all my videos, sorted by most watched, with the overall total watch time, average per view, and total average percent viewed. Its kinda eye opening. I should do more long streams! :P
